Career overview

Pharmacists review each patient's drug therapy for:

  • Appropriate medication, dosage, duration and route of administration
  • Indication
  • Effectiveness
  • Safety
  • Drug interactions, allergies or other contradictions
  • Pharmacists provide drug information and education to patients and professional staff

Pharmacists are responsible for storing, preparing, distributing and dispensing medications 24 hours a day, every day.

Pharmacists participate in numerous multidisciplinary medication activities, including:

  • Corrdinating PHarmacy and Therapeutics, Nursing-Pharmacy and Medication Safety Steering Committees
  • Conducting drug usage evaluations (DUEs)
  • Reviewing pathways and care management related to medication usage

  • Pharmacy Interns: Must currently be attending an accredited college of pharmacy. Current intern licensure from the MN Board of Pharmacy.
  • Pharmacy Technicians: High school diploma/GED for all areas. To work in a hospital setting, 2 years technician experience or AAS Pharmacy Technician experience required. To work in community/retail setting no experience is required, but prefer 2+ years experience or AAS degree.
  • Pharmacists: B.S. in Pharmacy or Pharm D from an accredited college of pharmacy. Pharmacist license in state practicing. Programs are now doctoral to obtain PharmD to practice.
