Drug Use Policy and Performance Improvement
Overview
The resident will gain the knowledge and experience through assisting in the
coordination of the P&T Committee and performance improvement initiatives.
The resident will be responsible to set up the agenda for P&T as well as
developing policies around medication use. The resident will gain knowledge
in determining the level of quality of services within the department and coordinate
improvement initiatives. The resident will learn about accreditation agencies
and the impact they have on drug use policy. Experiences and knowledge will
be attained in the procurement and inventory management processes.

Daily rotation activities
The resident will be assigned projects for the P&T Committee which will
include writing a drug monograph, reporting adverse drug events, developing
policies related to medication use, and developing and performing medication
use evaluations. The resident will meet with Pharmaceutical Sales Representatives
during scheduled appointments. In addition the resident will review recently
released medical literature and present pertinent information to pharmacy staff.
Purchasing contracts will be reviewed, signed and audited to assure compliance
to contracts. Drug cost savings will be tracked during the month and the monthly
pharmacy budget report will be completed and sent to the vice president of operations.
Finally the resident will be assigned a performance improvement initiative which
they will develop, coordinate, and recommend changes to improve pharmacy services
within the organization.
Interaction with health care providers
The resident will routinely interact with the pharmacy manager for performance
improvement and clinical pharmacy managers. In addition the resident will interact
with physicians and nurses on the P&T Committee as well as those who will
be part of performance improvement initiatives at Mercy & Unity Hospitals.
Meeting attendance
The resident will set up a meeting weekly with the preceptor for 30 minutes.
These meetings will allow time for the preceptor to review rotation activities
from the previous week and provide feedback on performance. The resident will
also set up a meeting on the last day of the rotation to review the preceptor
and resident evaluation. Additional meetings include attending the department
meetings, Continuing Medical Education Seminar, Hospitalist Care Improvement
Seminar, Leading Edge Educational Seminar and the P&T Committee (if applicable).

Orientation to the rotation - the preceptor will:
- Provide the resident the goals and objectives for the learning experience
- List the activities the resident will be engaged in during the month to
accomplish the goals and objectives (see step 7 of the RLS process)
- Describe how the preceptor will evaluate the resident (e.g., objective data,
criteria based checklist)
- Provide the resident with self evaluation forms (e.g., rotation evaluation
from, criteria based checklist), and
- Communicate how will the resident evaluate the preceptor
- Establish routine meetings during the month to provide feedback and allow
time for clarifying expectations. Monitor the growth and development of the
resident during this time.
