Owatonna Hospital receives state-wide patient safety award

OWATONNA, Minn. 03/31/2009--Five Allina Hospitals & Clinics’ hospitals received the Minnesota Hospital Association (MHA) Patient Safety Excellence Awards for the first quarter of 2009. The awards honor superior performance in preventing adverse health events. The awards are given to hospitals that are actively participating in one of MHA's safety campaigns and achieve 90 percent or higher of campaign roadmap steps.

Owatonna Hospital was honored for the Safe Site campaign to prevent wrong-site surgeries (the wrong procedure being performed, or a procedure being performed on the wrong body part or patient). In 2008, Owatonna Hospital was also honored for the Safe Skin campaign to prevent pressures ulcers, the Safe from Falls campaign to reduce patient falls in the hospital and the VHA Leadership Award for Clinical Excellence in treating hospitalized patients with pneumonia.

New Ulm Medical Center (NUMC) was honored for the Safe Count campaign to reduce retained objects in labor and delivery; Cambridge Medical Center and Unity Hospital in Fridley were honored for the Safe from Falls campaign; and Unity and Buffalo Hospital were honored for the Safe Skin campaign.

"Hospitals that receive these awards are to be commended -- the bar is set very high," said MHA Patient Safety Vice President Tania Daniels. "Hospitals that qualify have achieved measurable and meaningful progress toward implementing best practices to drive down adverse health events."

Each quarter, participating hospitals measure their progress in implementing the roadmap. Hospitals qualify if they reach the 90 percent benchmark during that timeframe. The current list of award-winning hospitals, and those awarded in June and October of 2008 can be found at http://www.mnhospitals.org.
