The Sleep Disorders Center provides specialized testing to identify difficulties
with sleep and/or staying awake. Sleep-related breathing disorders such as obstructive
sleep apnea (OSA) are relatively common and are associated with cardiac disease,
hypertension and daytime sleepiness. These disorders have the potential for
causing occupational injuries and/or motor vehicle accidents.
Identification of a sleep-related breathing disorder can lead to appropriate
treatment and prevention of secondary effects.
Sleep disorder quiz
Taking this quick quiz can help you see if you have the signs of a breathing-related sleep disorder:
Are you a loud snorer, disturbing your bedroom companion?
Do you feel tired and groggy upon awakening?
Do you experience sleepiness and fatigue during waking hours?
Are you overweight?
Have you been observed to choke, gasp or hold your breath during sleep?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, you should talk with your physician to see if a sleep study is needed.
What is a sleep study?
A sleep study (also called a polysomnogram) is a test that provides important information about whether your sleep is frequently interrupted, preventing you from getting the rest your body needs. Studies are conducted in a private, comfortable bedroom equipped with color television, phone and adjacent to a full bathroom and shower. If, during the first part of the study, the results show that you have obstructive sleep apnea, the technician may try a treatment device to see if it alleviates the problem. After the test is completed, any instruction about the treatment devices will be given and you will be provided with a complementary continental breakfast.
